So, it started snowing around 2 yesterday. Having something called “Spring” Break in March in New England is rather a joke. When we were having that beautiful weather at the beginning of March, people said we were gonna have one more serious snowstorm before winter let up for good. The idea of snow in March seems perfectly reasonable to me, and the reality bothered me only because i had plans for Wednesday and worried that they would be foiled. (In typical New England fashion, the final accumulation was much less than early predictions.) This snow actually made me happy, unlike the past few which i have been rather indifferent to. Had that “yay, winter, pretty” feel, which lends credence to my idea that the incessant cold had dulled my enjoyment of winter. There’s something homey about winter, to me, and it was nice to feel that again. It started snowing again this afternoon, and i hear it’s predicted to recur throughout the week. My symapthies to those for whom this weather is not so enjoyable.

So, it's begun snowing. Nothing's sticking yet but still, thinking good thoughts for all those who will be returning in whatever this weather turns into -- myself included.

Oops, forgot it's Wednesday (the day of the exam) not today that he has special pre-class office hours. Oh well, we'll go over the problem set in class, so i'll understand it by the end of class anyway.

Woke up to it snowing this morning. We all saw this coming since it is New England, but it was still kind of a "huh" moment. It's just enough to cover unpaved surfaces at the moment and i don't particularly expect it to last, though looking at weather.com it's apparently supposed to last through tomorrow, with recurrences on Friday and next Wednesday (and snow/rain next Monday). But according to Emma, there was a point last week when they thought it was going to snow all this week, so clearly the weather report is not exactly something to be relied upon (you already knew that, right?).
hermionesviolin: (anime night)
Clearly i never check the weather, so it's the e-mails about snow emergencies (and the smell of molasses) which alert me to predictions of snow.

It was weird to walk to class this morning through the snow not just in the snow, as the past few storms have ended during the night so plowing could occur.

I was telling Allie the other day that even i have begun to get tired of the cold as January was persistently cold, unlike the past decade or so when throughout the winter temperatures would fluctuate greatly even within the space of a week. I think the large amounts of snow are also why the snow has ceased to emotionally affect me. I don't dislike it, i'm just rather indifferent, which is an odd feeling for me and snow.

(Right now it looks like the snow has actually stopped, but i hear icy rain or something similarly nasty is predicted for this evening.)

I want a nap.

Wow, the world is white outside.

I wouldn't have even known snow was predicted but that the campus was molassesed.

The last time it snowed i was just "shrug, pretty," which made me sad, because usually the snow makes me so happy.

It was still only just starting when i went to my UMass class, so i didn't see it snowing in force until i was waiting for the bus back. The ground was already lightly covered, and the snowing pouring down at a bit of a slant which always looks so cool in the lamplight like in the movies... and the sky must have been cloudy to precipitate, but it looked bright solid blue with varying darknesses.

But -- maybe because i was waiting for a bus and usually in the snow i'm pedestrianing -- i felt like it was just weather, didn't have the joy snow usually gives me these past few years. *sighs*

[8:15pm: Looking out the windows it doesn't look like it's still snowing, but Charlotte just came back in from outside and says it's snowing hard, and that the accumulation is a few inches already.]

The snow plow below my window awakened me at 6am, but then i fell back asleep, so it was okay.

Walked to and from econ class (which i think i'm gonna like a lot) in the falling snow, which was lovely, especially since the walkways were newly plowed.

And now, homework. *sigh*

Oh, and there was light snowfall throughout the day on Sunday, which made me happy. I haven't spent much time outside these past few weeks and am pleased that starting today, i no longer have to travel to my meals, but this whole white world thing is really what winter should look like.

(Yes, i am going to bed now. I’m so much better at staying up and doing stuff than i am at getting up in the morning to do stuff.)

Oh, and i promise i do remember how to cut-tag entries :)
hermionesviolin: (anime night)
I walked out of Albright into a lightly dusted white world, with the soft haze of snow coming down.

I do love my winter; that i do.
hermionesviolin: (anime night)
Wow, it snowed out. No one told me it was going to snow. I just went to close my curtains, and lo, it was white out.

*opens window* *inhales snow smell*

Looks like it's stopped. Not even enough to cover all of the ice patches, but still, yay whiteness.

It's snowing again! I'm so excited. We came out of Strangers on a Train in Seelye and the ground was sparkly dusted and it was snowing. I was so excited (and bubbling about the movie) that i didn't even notice the cold. (Because i was only wearing a t-shirt under my perpetual sweatshirt, this afternoon when it was about 20 degrees i definitely did notice the extreme cold.)

I bitch about movies made out of books, but i keep forgetting so many of Hitchcock's movies were based on books. His movies fall into my "wouldn't wanna read the book, but will watch the movie" category, though, so i can watch guilt-free. *stops self from continuing on long digression about books made out of movies, mostly because she knows very little about Hitchcock* I enjoyed the movie a lot. Laughed a lot, which i didn't expect. JoJo pointed out that often filmmakers will inject some levity into suspenseful scenes, because then you're building tension, releasing tension, building the tension even more, and that makes sense, though i don't remember laughing during the previous 3 Hitchcock films i've seen. (Yes, i know i'm classic movie deprived. And not just as concerns Hitchcock. [livejournal.com profile] chiaroscuro17 may help remedy that this J-term, though.) Sometimes it was a bit unbelievable, but generally very suspenseful and an all-around well-done film.

The afternoon i arrived it was rainy, and that night everything froze and the sidewalks were treacherous the following day. This evening it snowed briefly and i was pleased, though i wish it had lasted longer.
hermionesviolin: (anime night)
I came home from church to the smell of molasses, and someone outside my hall just said it's snowing. Indeed it is. Yay. The rain a few days ago got rid of most of the snow, so i was happy when i heard another storm was coming.

Other stuff... will be talked about in another post.

[edit at 1:33pm: Wow, the cars are coated whiter than i would have expected in such a short period of time. The last time a blizzard was predicted -- last weekend -- i withheld belief since people blow things out of proportion, but if this keeps up it'll be another serious storm. Dinner's early tonight so the staff can get home with a bit more hope of safety.]
hermionesviolin: (anime night)
It finally started snowing here about a half an hour ago, though a snow emergency was declared this afternoon, and i kept hearing about the predictions of blizzard.

By the way, how cool is it that we were all able to track this storm by seeing our friends post about it as it hit them? It's like smoke signals, only digital. I think it's neat =)

For those of you just tuning in:

Prior to every snowstorm here, Smith College Physical Plant (Phys Plant) coats the blacktop with brown liquid. I hear this is a malt byproduct. The purpose is to keep the precipitation from freezing when it hits the pavement, thus turning it into brown slush which often doesn’t get shoveled. Many people, myself included, think this liquid smells like molasses, and often we talk about the “molasses men” having come.

Just a clarification, since people always ask what the heck i’m talking about when i mention the molasses.

Renata was the first of us to exit Hatfield, and she said "It's snowing!" and sure enough the ground was softly fleeced with white.

This is the beautiful soft kind that sparkles.

The sky is shining black and the lamplights illumine shafts of falling snow, inspiring the classic movie magic scene.
hermionesviolin: (anime night)
Dude! I just got up to turn on my light as it was growing greyer in my room and i glanced out my window and snow is swirling. It's also definitely sticking on the ground. As i've said before, snow in winter feels like home to me. I am happy.
hermionesviolin: (anime night)
Okay, so a few weekends ago i heard it snowed in the morning, but it had all melted by the time i got up. Shortly after my 1:00 class started today, it started snowing. So beautiful to look at out the window. Okay, so it's the wet kind that's nearly ice on the ground and i worry for those who drive (hell, i worry for pedestrians) but, i heart snow!

Kevin says the first snow is like a first kiss, but that leads to the second kiss, which is never as good as the first kiss, but that leads to the third kiss, which can be as good as the first.

P.S. More of it has stuck by now, so it's ever so much better to look at. I just love looking out my window at all the white. The parked cars covered in white... this is winter in New England, this is what i have grown up with, this is home.

[edit: a few hours later it had turned to rain *sighs* so it goes]
