Okay, so a few weekends ago i heard it snowed in the morning, but it had all melted by the time i got up. Shortly after my 1:00 class started today, it started snowing. So beautiful to look at out the window. Okay, so it's the wet kind that's nearly ice on the ground and i worry for those who drive (hell, i worry for pedestrians) but, i heart snow!

Kevin says the first snow is like a first kiss, but that leads to the second kiss, which is never as good as the first kiss, but that leads to the third kiss, which can be as good as the first.

P.S. More of it has stuck by now, so it's ever so much better to look at. I just love looking out my window at all the white. The parked cars covered in white... this is winter in New England, this is what i have grown up with, this is home.

[edit: a few hours later it had turned to rain *sighs* so it goes]

I'm jealous...

Cincinnati doesn't get snow often. I'll have to post some winter memories soon ;)

No snow? That's a tragedy! What's winter north of the Mason-Dixon line without snow?

Cincinnati, though in Ohio (southern Ohio across the river from Kentucky), is actually well south of the Mason-Dixon line. Isn't geography wonderful?

Okay, if you want to be figurative :) I was thinking of the line that Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed in 1763-1767. That forms the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland (and part of what is now West Virginia). That is located at 39 degrees, 43 minutes, 19.521 seconds north latitude. Since Hermione mentioned "north of" the line, I figured north of 39, 43, 19.521. Maybe I've had too much math, where "line" generally means a straight line.

The expression has come to mean the division between the old free and slave states. Much of that "line" is the Ohio River, which works its way considerably south of 39 etc. north. So I suppose you could say that Cincinnati on the Ohio is south of Mason' and Dixon's line but is north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Vaguely interesting fact: Hermione's paternal grandparents live just a few miles south of Mason' and Dixon's line in western Maryland.

Glad to meet you...

As I understand from your daughter's squee over you calling her Hermione (though I must say, her given name is just as nice) you must be her dad. And you are quite correct, I was interpreting M-D line as the geopolitical term, mostly because the line Mason and Dixon surveyed doesn't have much application outside of PA/MD other than as the geopolitical one.

And yes, Cincinnati is north of the M-D line politically. Though we've had our share of incidents that make that hard to prove. Our riots the last couple of years (and the on-going boycott of the city) are just the latest. The worst could very well be the firing of three shots by cannon by white folks into a black neighborhood in 1841. But I'm beginning to ramble and need to start fixing accounting errors for my client.

Again, pleased to meet you.
